Welcome to our first One School, One Book experience!
Take a selfie! Take your picture as you're reading about Ivan and his friends. Bring a copy or email it to us at [email protected] so we can add it to our Ivan bulletin board.
Let's see how many family selfies we can collect!

Dear WES Families,
Beginning tomorrow our school will be embarking on a special project, an all-school book club called One School, One Book. Every family will receive a copy of the same book – Katherine Applegate’s The One and Only Ivan, thanks to the generosity of the Westport Education Foundation and WES-MAC PTO. You will be asked to read this book together at home over the next few weeks. I am personally asking you to make the time so that your family can participate in this special activity.
Reading aloud at home is valuable because it better prepares your child to be an effective reader, and it is also a fun, worthwhile family activity. With the One School, One Book program, we aim to build a community of readers at our school. Everyone – students, parents, teachers, even administrative staff will all be following along together.
Your child will receive a copy of The One and Only Ivan at a special school-wide assembly introducing the program and the book. Along with the book, you will receive a reading schedule so that you can keep up at home. Generally, you will be asked to read about 15 minutes each week. Your child will be invited to answer weekly trivia questions to encourage and reward attentive listening. Throughout the weeks, everyone will be talking about The One and Only Ivan!
One School, One Book is an exciting program that allows children of all grade levels to experience the same book. Reading professionals believe that you can and should continue reading chapter books with your older children, even when they are able to read by themselves. We have selected a title that can be followed and understood and enjoyed by younger students, but will still captivate and stimulate deeper discussions with older children.
I know that your family will enjoy this special reading time. I hope to talk with both you and your child sometime this spring about Stella, Ivan, Ruby, and Bob and their life together at the Exit 8 Big Top Mall. With your help, we can build a community of readers at our school.
If you have any questions, please see the website http://wesoneschoolonebook.weebly.com/ or contact [email protected] and a Read Aloud committee member will get back to you. Be on the lookout for your child’s copy of The One and Only Ivan and an informational packet.
Happy Reading,
